Seán Comerford
Optimisation Research
UCD

Seán is from Kilkenny and currently studying a masters in Computer Science at the University of Edinburgh, having graduated with a masters in Energy Systems Engineering from UCD in 2024. During his thesis for his masters in Energy Systems Engineering, he developed a genetic algorithm to produce a schedule that optimised the energy use at a manufacturing facility. This work lead to a Research Assistant role with UCD, where he worked on a project to implement a genetic algorithm at an orthopedic implant manufacturing facility with the objective of producing a schedule that minimised the delay across all jobs, therefore increasing overall machine efficiency. In this role, I also worked on a project that proposed a Linear Programming method to reduce energy costs at a steel manufacturing facility, orchestrating energy use from the grid, an onsite photovoltaic system and a battery energy storage system. After his Computer Science masters in Edinburgh, his aim to pursue a career deploying machine learning systems in the energy industry or other industries where these technologies can have a meaningful impact.
